Why Your Dreams Won’t Happen Without a Plan (and Why That’s Actually Good News)

If you’ve hung around my blog or instagram page long enough, you know I was late to start everything–my career, marriage, a family. I truly had no idea what I wanted for my life. I went to 7 different colleges (and STILL have yet to graduate!)

After a failed first marriage, I didn’t find the one until I was 34–got married and then had my first child at 37 and my second the day before I turned 41.

To say I never followed a plan is a huge understatement.

I mean, I had a general idea of what I wanted but no real plan (or knowledge!) of how to get there.

But when I got married and we started our family, it felt like everything was finally falling into place.

I got my Health, Property and Casualty License to sell Health Insurance and much to my surprise, really enjoyed helping people in that industry. I got married and a year later, had my daughter (my son soon after) and I knew I was finally on the way to the life I knew I was supposed to live.

But fast forward 20 years–my kids were graduating and finding their own way, and I was beginning to realize my career had gone stale.

I was at a cross roads. It was time for new dreams. Only this time, I wasn’t going to waste time and leave my future to chance.

So I took control and set out to make this new chapter in my life happen.

I dove in head first–I took online webinars (can I get an Amen for Tony Robbins!!), read books and blogs, listened to every helpful podcast, subscribed to every youtube channel.

And finally, I knew what I wanted to do and was ready to go for it!!

Fast forward again, a couple months, and I realized that even though I knew what I wanted to do, I just wasn’t gaining any real momentum to get there.

I pretended I had good reason. I told myself I was just too busy, and needed to wait until the timing or money was right…but I knew that wasn’t the truth.

The real problem was, I had no plan.

Have you ever had a season where you felt really inspired…
but nothing really changed?

You thought about traveling more.
You imagined taking better care of yourself.
You dreamed about meaningful work, deeper friendships, or finally doing something just for you.

And then life happened.
Again.

If that feels familiar, there’s nothing wrong with you.
You didn’t lack motivation — you lacked a bridge between real life and your dreams.

The Missing Link Between Dreams and Reality

Dreaming is powerful.
But dreaming alone doesn’t change your life.
You need something that will connect the two and allow for an exciting journey, not just a destination.

Without a plan, even the most exciting vision slowly fades into the background of everyday responsibilities. Not because it didn’t matter — but because you never found the way to cross over–from old life, habits and responsibilites, to the new.

This is where many empty nest moms get stuck:

  • They know what they want
  • They feel inspired for a moment
  • But they don’t know how to move forward without overwhelming themselves

They don’t have The Bridge.

In my workshop, The Joyful Rewrite we don’t stop at vision. We teach you how to translate dreams into something livable, how to start out on this beautiful journey and determine the steps you need to take in order to live out your new dreams.

Why The Bridge Is More Important Than Your Motivation

Motivation is unreliable.
Life is busy. Energy fluctuates.

But the Bridge? (aka your personal action steps and calendar system)
That’s where intention becomes reality.

When you intentionally place what matters most into your schedule, you send a powerful message to yourself: “I matter and so does what I want”

This isn’t about cramming your days full.
It’s about protecting space for the life you want to live.
It’s about following a simple process that allows you to get from where you are now, to the exciting vision you’ve created for your future.

Small Steps Create Big Shifts

One of the biggest myths about change is that it has to be drastic.

In reality, the most lasting transformations come from:

  • Small, meaningful goals
  • Gentle consistency
  • Realistic timelines

When you pull goals directly from your vision — instead of from comparison or pressure — they feel energizing instead of exhausting.

When I worked for the Management Consulting company, we learned how to pull goals out of our “My Perfect Day” (Read all about that step here). From there, we determined the action steps we would need to accomplish each goal, then we would put them in our daytimer –our 1980’s name for a pocket planner.

The Daytimer was our lifeline. And it shoud be yours too-but you don’t have to use a daytimer–you might choose an app on your phone, your calendar or whatever works for you.

The important thing to remember is, these steps are The Bridge you need to realize your dreams.

The Bridge method is the only tool you need to help you realize your dreams.

The Bridge in a nutshell: Begin with the end in mind pulling action steps out to reach your goals, add those action items to the planning system of your choice, protect that time FIERCELY, assess your progress, change/adjust accordingly.

And committing to this process is how dreams stop feeling far away… and start feeling possible.

Why This Step Builds Confidence

Every time you follow through on something you intentionally planned, your confidence grows.

Not because you did something big —
but because you kept a promise to yourself.

Over time, those small wins compound.
You stop doubting yourself.
You start trusting yourself.

And that trust changes everything.

This Is Where a Vision Becomes a Life

Your Empty Nest years aren’t meant to be filled with someday thinking.

They’re meant to be lived — on purpose.

When you give your dreams a plan, you’re not limiting them.
You’re inviting them into your real, beautiful, everyday life.
